LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas is currently in the top five in the nation for its incarceration rate.

Arkansas currently has more than 17,000 of its just over three million people locked up in state prisons.

Due to the overcrowding, Governor Sarah Sanders has recently announced plans to build a 3,000-bed state prison in Franklin County to add to the Arkansas Department of Corrections’ capacity of approximately 16,000 inmates.

Research shows Arkansas’ current rate of incarceration per 100,000 population ranks third in the nation.

Arkansas ranks behind only Louisiana and Mississippi and just ahead of Oklahoma.

The numbers show that approximately 2.9% of the total state population – 91,000 people – are either locked up in state, federal or county facilities or under supervision serving terms of probation or parole.
