LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — An Arkansas man sentenced to life in prison for conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a 6-year-old child died following a “perceived altercation” with another inmate Monday.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, 35-year-old Mario Waters was found unresponsive about 12:20 a.m. Monday at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Despite life-saving efforts, Waters was later pronounced dead Monday at a Terre Haute hospital.
The FBI has been notified about Waters’ death, the Bureau of Prisons said.
He had been incarcerated at the high-security federal prison in Terre Haute since April 21, 2023, the Tribune-Star reported.
Waters was sentenced in the Eastern District of Arkansas in March after admitting in court to having sexual contact with a minor girl and was involved in trafficking her with others.
In February 2018, the girl was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock after experiencing symptoms that were later determined to be caused by several sexually transmitted diseases, the Department of Justice said in an earlier news release.
Federal officials later interviewed the girl where she disclosed a man, later determined to be DeMarcus George, raped her. She also gave the description of another man involved which was determined to be Waters.
She told investigators that on at least one occasion, Waters came to a hotel room where she was with George, and Waters raped her before paying George.
