Senator Imee Marcos made the case for putting former President Rodrigo Duterte out of the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction by citing the temporary freedom granted to his fierce critic, former senator Leila De Lima.
Imee, who recently reaffirmed her loyalty to the Dutertes, said in a statement Tuesday (November 14), that the decision of a Muntinlupa court to allow De Lima to post a P300,000 for a drug-related case showed the Philippine justice system is working.
“The independence of the judiciary is present and true. Our court is a court of law and justice, oblivious of personalities or any political noise. Sen. De Lima’s bail yesterday was a testament to that,” the presidential sister said.
Imee insisted that the ICC has no right to try Duterte for alleged crimes against humanity in connection with the bloody war on drugs under his administration.
“It bolsters my position mula simula pa, that the ICC has no jurisdiction over any Filipino – lalo na kay PRRD,” she said.
“It has no business meddling with our justice system,” Imee added.
De Lima was jailed on what her camp called trumped-up charges during Duterte’s time after she led a Senate investigation into the death squad killings in Davao city when Duterte was mayor.
The then senator De Lima was the subject of misogynist attacks in the public speeches of Duterte, who vowed to destroy the reputation of his political archrival.
