Amnesty International calls on Zionist entity to stop torturing prisoners in its prisons
RAMALLAH July 19. 2024 (Saba) – Amnesty International called on the Zionist enemy authorities on Thursday, to end the indefinite detention of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and to put an end to their torture in its prisons and isolate them from the outside world.
Amnesty International said in a statement: “The Zionist authorities must stop detaining Palestinians from the occupied Gaza Strip in isolation from the outside world and indefinitely, without charge or trial, under the Unlawful Combatants Law.”
The international human rights organization stressed that this constitutes a flagrant violation of international law.
After the war on Gaza, the Zionist enemy amended the Unlawful Combatants Law, to legalize the arbitrary detention of Palestinians without taking administrative measures against them for a period of 45 days, while previously the maximum period was 96 hours.
The prosecution was supposed to bring the detainee before the court after 14 days of his arrest. Now, the period is 75 days, and can be extended up to 180 days, and detainees are prevented from communicating with their lawyers by obtaining judicial approval.
The organization documented the cases of 27 released prisoners, including five women, 21 men, and a 14-year-old boy, who were detained for periods of up to four and a half months, without being allowed to contact a lawyer or their families, under the aforementioned law.
According to the statement: “All those Amnesty International spoke to said that the Israeli army, intelligence, or police forces subjected them to torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment while they were held incommunicado.”
The statement explained that in some cases, this amounted to enforced disappearance. The detainees were detained from various parts of the Gaza Strip, from shelters, homes, hospitals, and checkpoints. Amnesty International called for the abolition of the Unlawful Combatants Law.
