Drug lord Fabio Ochoa released, returns to Colombia after 25 years in US prison

A CONVICTED COLOMBIAN DRUG LORD WHO SERVED 25 YEARS IN A U-S PRISON – IS A FREE MAN IN HIS HOME COUNTRY AFTER HIS RELEASE.

FABIO OCHOA VASQUEZ IS NOW 67 YEARS OLD AND WAS DEPORTED BY US AUTHORITIES AFTER SERVING HIS TIME.

HE LANDED IN BOGOTA COLOMBIA MONDAY.

COLOMBIAN AUTHORITIES RAN HIS FINGERPRINTS AT THE AIRPORT AND MADE IT CLEAR THAT OCHOA IS NOT FACING ANY CRIMINAL CHARGES RELATED TO ANY MEDELLIN CRIMES HE MAY HAVE COMMITTED IN THE 1980S OR 90S.

SOME COLOMBIAN HISTORIANS BELIEVE THE MEDELLIN CARTEL KILLED MORE THAN 10-THOUSAND PEOPLE IN THE COLOMBIAN STATE UNDER INFAMOUS LEADER PABLO ESCOBAR, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS.

OCHOA, A FORMER DRUG LORD WITH THE MEDELLIN CARTEL, BECAME A BILLIONAIRE IN THE 1980S WHILE PLAYING A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SMUGGLING COCAINE FROM COLOMBIA TO THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER MARKETS. HE WAS ALSO A FORMER ASSOCIATE OF ESCOBAR. HE DENIES KILLING ANYONE – A CLAIM THAT VICTIMS OF MEDELLIN CARTEL VIOLENCE REFUSE TO BELIEVE.

IN 1990, OCHOA AND HIS BROTHERS SURRENDERED TO COLOMBIAN AUTHORITIES, AND SERVED NEARLY SIX YEARS IN A COLOMBIAN PRISON BEFORE BEING RELEASED IN 1996. HE WAS ARRESTED AGAIN IN 1999, ALONGSIDE OTHER DRUG LORDS, AND EXTRADITED TO THE U.S. IN 2001. IN 2003, HE WAS CONVICTED OF DRUG TRAFFICKING AND SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON.

NOW THAT OCHOA IS BACK IN COLOMBIA VICTIMS OF MEDELLIN CARTEL CRIMES ARE VOICING CONCERNS ABOUT HIM BEING A FREE MAN.

THE MAYOR OF BOGOTÁ’S CARLOS FERNANDO GALÁN’S FATHER LUIS CARLOS GALÁN – WAS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHEN HE WAS KILLED BY CARTEL HITMEN HIRED BY ESCOBAR IN 1989.

MAYOR GALAN WROTE A POST ON X SAYING IT WAS “UNACCEPTABLE” THAT OCHOA WAS NOT FACING ANY CHARGES IN COLOMBIA IN RELATION TO MEDELLIN CRIMES.

OCHOA SPOKE TO JOURNALISTS AT THE AIRPORT AND TOLD THEM U.S. PROSECUTORS FRAMED HIM AND STATED HE HAD ALREADY DONE HIS TIME IN A COLOMBIAN PRISON IN THE 1990S.
