Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon released after serving four months in prison, week ahead of election day

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s longtime ally Steve Bannon has been released from prison on Tuesday (Oct 29), after serving a four-month sentence for defying subpoenas in the congressional investigation into the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.

The last time Bannon was a free man, incumbent President Joe Biden was the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Randilee Giamusso, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, confirmed that Bannon was released.

Bannon, the right-wing podcast host and former Trump campaign official, was released from federal Bureau of Prisons custody. This comes right one week ahead of the US presidential elections, in which Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to face each other.

Kristie Breshears, a spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons said that Bannon left the federal correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut.

He also plans to hold a news conference later in the day in Manhattan, according to Bannon’s representatives.

Moreover, he is also likely to resume his podcast  “Bannon’s War Room” on Tuesday.

Bannon was sent to prison on July 1 after the US Supreme Court rejected his attempt to delay the prison sentence while he appealed against his conviction.

The jury found him guilty of two counts in 2022, one for refusing to sit for a deposition with the January 6 House committee and a second for not providing the documents related to his involvement in Trump’s efforts to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential elections.

While serving his sentence, he called himself a “political prisoner”.

“I am proud of going to prison,” Bannon said at the time, adding that he was standing up to the US Attorney General Merrick Garland, and a “corrupt” justice department.

He added that there was “no chance” Democrats could win the coming election unless “they’re stealing it.”
