Remulla: Time to update Revised Penal Code for more effective justice

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla proposed on Friday (June 14) to review and update the Revised Penal Code (RPC).

“It is about time to review our Penal Code, one that should be truly responsive and attuned to the present times for a more effective administration of justice,” he said.

To help in this endeavor, Remulla said the Department of Justice (DOJ) has tapped the help of Germany-based non-government organization (NGO) Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF).

“It is an honor to team up with such a notably recognized international body known for its unwavering pursuit of excellence in fortifying international criminal justice systems,” said the DOJ chief.

The DOJ, represented by Usec. Jesse Hermogenes Andres, and Hanns Seidel, represented by Resident Rep. Alexander Birle, signed last June 3 a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The department explained that the MOU is meant “strengthen the collaboration of the State’s prosecution arm with law enforcement agencies and modernize the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines.”

“This MOU renews a previous partnership between the DOJ and HSF where both teamed-up to conduct a series of dialogues in Northern Mindanao which intensified cooperation between the prosecution and law enforcement agencies towards a better criminal justice system in the region,” it noted.
