Inside jail where President Joe Biden’s son Hunter could serve 25 years

Hunter Biden was found guilty of all three felony charges related to the purchase of a gun – and now the president’s son could spend 25 years in jail.

Hunter Biden, 54, stared straight ahead and showed little emotion as the verdict was read after jury deliberations that lasted only three hours over two days in Wilmington, Delaware. He hugged his lawyers, smiled wanly and kissed his wife, Melissa, before leaving the courtroom with her.

Prosecutors argued the president’s son lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs in 2018. President Joe Biden said in a statement issued shortly after the verdict that he would accept the outcome and “continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.”

Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, though as a first-time offender, he would not get anywhere near the maximum, and there’s no guarantee the judge would send him to prison. She did not set a sentencing date. But where could the president’s son end up?

Howard R. Young Correctional Institution

The Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Delewa is named after a 33-year Department veteran who died in 2001 after a battle with cancer. Originally called the Multi-Purpose Criminal Justice Facility, it was renamed in honour of Young in February 2004. Young was the first warden of the prison when it opened in 1982.

According to its website, the original facility, now called the West Wing, was designed to hold 360 detainees, individuals who are awaiting trial/sentencing or unable to make bail. In 1992, a new section, the East Wing, opened. This construction project added 480 beds for sentenced offenders. Additional construction projects have increased the capacity to 1,180. The facility now averages 1,500 offenders. Given its location in Wilmington, Delaware, this could be the top contender if Hunter Biden were to face jail time as the other two prisons are located further out of the major city.

James T Vaughn Correctional Centre

The Correctional Centre near Smyrna, Delaware is the state’s largest adult, male correctional facility. It houses approximately 2,500 inmates who are minimum, medium, and maximum security. It also houses inmates sentenced to the death penalty. Executions are carried out at the JTVCC.

Opening in 1971, it can house over 2,600 inmates and has razor wire around the building. The 600 maximum security cells have been constructed in six new housing units with 888 new beds. Three hundred cells have a single bed; 300 cells are double-bunked unless they are handicap-accessible in which case the cell is single-bunked, according to its website.

Sussex Correctional Institution

Located in Georgetown, Delaware, this prison is one of the oldest in the US after it was opened in 1931 and houses maximum, medium, and minimum security inmates. It’s an all-male prison that saw an expansion between April 1997 and April 2000, with 760 beds added to the facility to make a total capacity of 1,109 beds. The expansion brought the total capacity of the institution to 1,206.

It also provides inmates with educational opportunities, vocational training, work assignments, spiritual/religious opportunities and a variety of other classes and programming. This prison also has the Road to Recovery (R2R) treatment programme, a therapeutic community model that creates individualised treatment plans based on the inmates’ specific needs.
