A 58-year-old prisoner with a long history of carrying out burglaries in Cork has been spending time in custody painting pictures and the sentencing judge in his latest case advised him to “stick to the art in future”.
Judge Mary Dorgan said that she had seen other prisoner art recently and found it impressive. She told David Cronin that he would be better off putting his time into that kind of activity.
David Cronin of no fixed address appeared at Cork District Court by video link from Portlaoise Prison.
Sergeant John Kelleher outlined the background to the latest offence committed by Cronin.
Gardaí examined the scene of the crime at a house on Donovan’s Road, Cork, where there was blood on the smashed pane of glass in a downstairs bathroom window. The intruder had entered by this window and stolen a bottle of Jameson whiskey and £60 sterling.
A follow-up forensic analysis of the bloodstain on the broken window established a DNA link to the accused man.
Sergeant John Kelleher said Cronin had 115 previous convictions commencing many years ago and almost half of them were for burglaries.
Frank Buttimer solicitor said the accused was putting his time in prison to good use and was involved in painting pictures.
