How Donald Trump’s prison sentence could look: Secret Service guard, strip searches, and no hair product

On Thursday, a Manhattan Jury indicted Former US President Donald Trump on 34 counts of felony in the hush money case. The sentencing for this is expected on July 11 by Judge Juan Merchan. Trump is also expected to be officially announced as the Republican Party nominee for the upcoming US Presidential elections in November 2024 during the Republican Party Convention which will be held close to this sentencing date.

What does Trump’s prison look like?

As per federal law, the former president would need round-the-clock security of secret service agents who would be rotated in shifts. Though New York state rules bar firearms in prisons, high-profile prisoners would need to be protected. Further, all items entering the prison will have to be thoroughly checked. Further, convicts will not be permitted to use hair gel or makeup kits inside the prison. Jails will have to be assessed before the sentencing of Trump in view of the necessary logistical arrangements.

Will Trump land in Rikers Island prison

However, if the prison term is less than a year, he would be sent to a prison in Rikers Island which is deemed to be inhumane. Authorities voted in 2019 to shut it down by 2027. Here, the former president will be subjected to strip searches and be subjected to the same rules as other inmates. Further, he may not be permitted a separate enclosure and may have to be imprisoned along with the other inmates. This could be a security nightmare in this prison.

What is Trump up against?

The New York County District Attorney has still not confirmed whether he will be seeking a prison term after the former President was convicted on 34 counts of felony. The maximum punishment for this offense is four years. However, concurrently the prison term could extend beyond 100 years if he is given a prison term for all the offenses.

What may work in favor of Trump is that he has no record of any previous criminal offense and these offenses are Class E felony offenses. This may give the former President hope and he could get away with some community service or fines.
