Clarksville Arts Commission requests proposal for Indiana State Prison sculpture

CLARKSVILLE — The Clarksville Arts Commission is requesting proposals for a new metal art installation to commemorate the historic Indiana State Prison, which later became the Colgate Plant.

The commission is asking for applicants to submit proposals for a pedestrian-scale metal sculpture that will use steel prison bars from the former prison. This sculpture will be integrated into a parklet at 1220 Main Street. The budget for the project will be around $25,000.

Commission President Cory Hoehn said this is the first project the commission has requested for proposal. He said they’re hoping it will be finished by the end of the year.

During a meeting, while discussing their potential first project, a commission member mentioned that the town has these prison bars from the old prison.

Hoehn said the specific location was selected because it will be the “core” of the town’s arts district, and he said these parklets on Main Street were always designed in mind for public art.

“That seemed like a good place to invest,” he said.

He said this sculpture will transform the old material into a piece of work that people will enjoy and learn from, and give another reason for people to visit that area.

Artist proposals are submitted to Arts Commission liaison Ken Conklin at kconklin@townofclarksville.com Proposals must be sent no later than 4 p.m. on June 15.
