The FCI Dublin prison in California’s Bay Area is set to be closed, the Bureau of Prisons announced Monday. Known as the ‘rape club’ among inmates who stayed there, the prison became notorious for reports of sexual abuse of female inmates by the prison staff. At least eight employees of the Bay Area prison have been charged with sexual abuse of inmates so far since 2021.

Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters confirmed to the Daily Mail that the agency took “unprecedented steps” to address concerns of employee misconduct, along with “culture, recruitment and retention” and “aging infrastructure” at the prison, leading to the prison being closed down.

“Despite these steps and resources, we have determined that FCI Dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility,” Peters told the Daily Mail. “This decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources.”

An in-depth investigative report by the Associated Press (AP) in 2021 first exposed rampant staff-on-inmate sexual abuse at FCI Dublin. Among accused was also former warden Ray Garcia. After the report was published, a judge had assigned a special master to oversee reforms at FCI Dublin.

The agency said that women prisoners who were being housed in the prison are being moved to other locations. No employee will lose their job as they will also be reappointed in other prisons.

The Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin is a low-security federal prison for female inmates located about 21 miles southeast of Oakland on the Parks Reserve Forces Training Area in in Dublin, California. It is one of six women-only federal prisons and the only one west of the Rocky Mountains
