Yet again, HM Prison and Probation Service are screwing us over with the canteen prices. According to TV news, shop prices have reached their peak, and, in some cases, they have fallen. Yet prison prices are still rising, with prison wages stagnant.

They say that DHL must stick to the recommended retail price, but how do we know what that is? An example of this is vapes and the letter from Zest Sham Khan (Mailbags, January) saying the vapes in Scottish prisons sell for £2.20 per pack. In my area I have never seen 88Vapes in the shops, so I cannot compare the prices.

Yorkshire Tea bags for a box of 40 was £1.29. Now they are doing boxes of 80 tea bags for £3.29. And coffee has also shot up in price. When I worked for DHL at Whatton, I used to notice that some items sold more than others and as it goes, all the better selling items, or items that are needed, such as toiletries, are the things that seem to rise in price. The items they sell least of either stay low or have a small drop in price. Come on, HMPPS. We may be in prison, but we’re not fools.
