Prisoner pronounced dead after apparent assault at the United States Penitentiary in Bruceton Mills

BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va (WDTV) – An inmate imprisoned at a high security facility in Bruceton Mills was pronounced dead after an apparent assault Saturday night.

According to a press release obtained by WDTV, at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024, employees responded to an apparent assault at the United States Penitentiary (USP) Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.

Responding employees isolated and contained the incident and initiated life-saving measures.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested while life-saving efforts continued.

Marcelino Heredia was assessed by EMS and was subsequently pronounced deceased by EMS and outside medical personnel.

A second individual was medically assessed at the facility and had no apparent injuries.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified.

No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger.

Heredia was a 48-year-old male who was sentenced in the Eastern District of Wisconsin to a 264-month sentence for unlawfully killing another human being with malice aforethought and without justification.

He had been in custody at USP Hazelton since September 12, 2022.

USP Hazelton is a high security facility.
