Facebook marketplace sales of WA prisoner art under review

Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce will lead a review into policies that allow prison staff to buy and sell items manufactured by prisoners.

It comes after images surfaced claiming to show a Bunbury Regional Prison employee using Facebook Marketplace to sell garden ornaments made by inmates in the pre-release unit.

The items include a heart-shaped sculpture standing 3 metres high and 2.4 metres wide with fitted night lights which sold for $1000, as well as figures of kangaroos and an emu.

In response to questions from WAtoday and Nine News, the Department of Justice’s People, Culture and Standards division carried out a “thorough assessment” finding no evidence that prison resources were misused.

However, the rules around prison workshops could soon be overhauled.
