A convicted drug trafficker has been sentenced to prison for entering the country illegally after seven deportations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Gabino Escamilla, 43, pleaded guilty on Nov. 8. On Feb. 1, U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez sentenced Escamilla to 40 months in prison.

Escamilla is expected to be deported after completing his sentence. He will be transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The U.S. Border Patrol conducted the investigation. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Terence A. Check Jr. prosecuted the case.

During the sentencing, the court heard about Escamilla’s conviction in 2016 for conspiracy to distribute more than 5 kilograms of cocaine in Columbus, Ohio.

“Escamilla had already been removed from the United States six times prior to his conviction for drug trafficking,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

On Aug. 30, Border Patrol agents encountered Escamilla near Laredo. Escamilla was first deported on Jan. 25, 2010. He has been deported seven times since then.
