Bixby man sentenced to 13 years in prison for shooting girlfriend

BIXBY, Okla. — The U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell sentenced A Bixby man to 13 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend in 2021. 

Jeffery David Sutton, 55, was sentenced to 157 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

In Oct. 2022, Sutton was convicted for carrying, using, brandishing, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and assault with dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.

Sutton was also ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution.

In Dec. 2021, Sutton got into an argument with his girlfriend. He had told her to move out. The girlfriend had packed her things and was waiting for someone to pick her up when Sutton changed his mind, returned home. The two then began arguing in the front yard. During the argument, Sutton went to his truck, pulled out a gun and started shooting at his girlfriend.

He fired at least eight times toward her, multiple bullets hitting the doorway she was standing in and one hitting her in the chest.

During the incident, Sutton said he was going to kill the girlfriend and her family.

Tulsa County Sheriff’s Department responded to the incident and found Sutton in the front lawn with an empty firearm. He was then taken into custody.

Law enforcement provided emrgency care to the girlfriend, supplying pressure to the her wound. She was taken to a nearby hospital, treated and later released.

Court records show Sutton was the owner of a gun store in Bixby, and trained in handling firearms. He will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
