Parents bring back open jail escapee who fled prison to meet ‘ailing’ mom | Pune News

PUNE: Life-term convict Ashish Jadhav, who had escaped from Yerawada open jail on Monday afternoon, surrendered early on Wednesday morning after his parents spoke to him and brought him back to the prison.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that Jadhav had been restive for the last few days after learning that his mother had suffered a heart attack. The open jail, which has minimum security, gave him the opportunity to slip out of the facility,”open jail superintendent Anil Khamkar said in a statement on Wednesday.
Sub-inspector Ashok Kate of the Yerawada police said, “Jadhav took a lift in a truck to reach his relative’s place in Tuljapur in Solapur district. He reached Swargate bus terminus early on Wednesday morning and called up his father. On reaching home, his parents convinced him and brought him back to the prison around 7.30am on Wednesday. Our team reached the jail after an alert from the authorities to take Jadhav into custody in the escape case registered against him.”
Kate said, “On Tuesday night, we had visited Jadhav’s residence, but he was not there. We told his parents that they should tell their son to surrender if he contacts or visits them. The parents considered our request and counselled him to surrender.”
He said Jadhav told police that he had some cash, which helped him meet his travel expenses from Pune to Solapur and return to Pune. Jadhav was produced before a city court, which sent him to magisterial custody. He was later sent to the Yerawada jail for completing his life sentence.
Open jail superintendent Khamkar told TOI, “We don’t know when Jadhav’s mother had suffered a heart attack. On October 17, his mother and sister had met him in the open jail. We don’t know how the convict received a message that his mother was not well.”
He said, “Jadhav used the smartphone card facility to interact with his family members on the phone but he never informed us that his mother was currently undergoing treatment for a heart ailment. Had he informed us about it, we could have helped him in establishing communication with the family.”
Jadhav has breached the prisons’ norms by escaping. Now, he cannot stay in the open jail, he added.
When Jadhav was produced before the court, he told the magistrate that he had fled the jail after coming to know that his mother was unwell, assistant public prosecutor Yogesh Kadam said.
