Gottlieb: Criminal justice reform should continue

The results of the election were finalized on Nov. 14 and Bob Anderson came out ahead in the Loudoun County commonwealth’s attorney’s race. While this may not directly affect many of us, it will negatively affect the Loudoun community — especially our youth, Black and brown communities, veterans, people with substance abuse disorder and those suffering from mental health issues.

Anderson has vowed to “harshly prosecute misdemeanors.” That would contribute to the mass incarceration problem in America and be a detriment to our community. His policies will result in Loudoun’s most at-risk community members sitting in jail, losing jobs, not seeing their kids and not being productive Loudoun residents. Additionally, locking up nonviolent community members will cost taxpayers more money than working to address the root cause of their behaviors.
