Photography was supported by the Art Fund for the first time in 1975. A collection of 94 portraits by Julia Margaret Cameron including ones of Carlyle, Tennyson, Holman Hunt, Browning, Trollope and this, of mathematician, astronomer and pioneer of photography John Frederick William Herschel, were bought for the National Portrait Gallery
