Indonesian Prepares Mass Pardon for Drug Convicts

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated that his office is currently conducting preparation for a mass pardon for drug convicts. He targeted the preparation to be done before 2024.

“After everything is ready [the ministry] will request for the president [President Jokowi] to decide [the pardon] in a cabinet hearing,” Mahfud MD said when met after a limited meeting on drugs in Jakarta today, Oct. 12.

According to Mahfud MD, the ministry is drafting the mass pardon after a report on prison’s over-capacity for drug convicts. He ensured that the mass pardon must be discussed with the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the head of the National Narcotics Agency Petrus Reinhard Golose stated that the government is preparing for a special maximum-security prison for drug convicts. The plan is intended to tackle the current problem of over-capacity faced by the institution. The maximum security prison will be placed at Nusakambangan, Mahfud MD said.

According to the press release from the ministry, Nusakambangan will see three more prisons, namely the Maximum Security Prison Ngaseman, Maximum Security Prison Gladakan, and Minimum Security Prison Nirbaya.
