
A fight at a high-security federal prison in Beaumont left one inmate dead, sent two others to the hospital, and a fourth being treated for minor injuries.
BEAUMONT, Texas — One inmate died two days after a fight involving multiple inmates at the United States Penitentiary Beaumont on Monday evening. Two others were hospitalized, and a fourth was treated for minor injuries.
Ashford Tyrrell Eldridge, 35, was transported by ambulance to a Southeast Texas hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by hospital personnel.
Correctional officers responded to the fight Monday evening at about 8:15 p.m. at the high-security federal facility in Beaumont.
Prison staff isolated and contained the fight, the Bureau of Prisons said. Emergency medical services were requested while life-saving efforts continued, according to the agency.
Two other inmates were taken to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
A fourth was medically assessed and treated for minor injuries at the prison, the Bureau of Prisons said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured, and at no time was the public in danger.
The federal agency did not release additional details about the cause of the fight or whether any charges would be filed in connection with it.
Eldridge had been serving a 77-month sentence for illegal possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He was sentenced in the Northern District of Texas and had been in custody at USP Beaumont since May 20, 2024.
The U.S. Penitentiary Beaumont is a high-security facility and currently houses 1,388 male offenders, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons website.
The penitentiary is located in the Beaumont Federal Correctional Complex along with two other federal facilities including the Federal Correctional Institution Beaumont Low and the Federal Correctional Institution Beaumont Medium.
Together the three facilities house nearly 4,955 federal inmates.
