Chadwick Mobley plead no contest to first-degree premeditated murder and two other charges back in February.
LAPEER, Mich. (WJRT) – 44-year-old Chadwick Mobley was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for the 2011 murder of Andrea Eilber in Mayfield Township.
Mobley plead no contest to three charges back in February. At that time, he told the judge that he was intoxicated when the deadly shooting took place inside the home of Eilber’s uncle.
“You are not good enough to be considered a monster, because even a monster would have told us why, which is all we have ever asked for,” said Eilber’s step-sister, Carly Teachout during a victim impact statement.
In 2011, 20-year-old Eilber was shot in the back of the head while housesitting for her aunt and uncle in Mayfield Township. In the years following, Kenneth Grondin, her boyfriend, was convicted of 1st degree murder.
But in 2022, the case was reopened, and police say more advanced DNA testing linked Chadwick Mobley to the crime. He was arrested in 2023 in Libby, Montana, and briefly escaped, before he was extradited back to Michigan to stand trial.
“At least this plea will hopefully get you out of society, so you can never hurt anyone else’s loved one,” said Stephanie Hummer, Eilber’s Aunt.
In court Tuesday, Mobley apologized for their loss, saying that he had “no words that could bring them solace.”
Meanwhile. Grondin has since had his conviction overturned by the Court of Appeals due to a error with a form used in court. He is currently awaiting a new trial.
Mobley says he has no connection to Grondin.
“As far as Kenneth Grondin goes, I do not know who this guy is. I have never met him. I’ve never spoken to him. I’ve never communicated with him on any form of media,” Mobley said.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Michael Nolan said the life sentence is not enough to bring justice.
“You took a life that wasn’t yours to take and along with it, you took the lives of the family that loved her. And you sir, will live with that for the rest of your life,” he said.
Mobley will serve life in prison for first-degree premeditated murder, plus an additional two years for a felony firearm charge. A third felony murder charge he had plead no contest to was dismissed.
As for Kenneth Grondin, dates for his new trial have not yet been set.
