Trump administration considers sending American criminals to Central America prisons

President Donald Trump is maintaining his stance against facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man mistakenly deported and currently held in a notorious Salvadoran prison.

Trump has been touting a decrease in border crossings while expanding the military presence at the southern border, citing the complexity of the current situation.

As El Salvador accepts hundreds of Venezuelan prisoners for the U.S., the administration is considering the possibility of sending American citizens convicted of crimes to Central American prisons.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday, “He would only consider this, if legal, for Americans who are the most violent, egregious repeat offenders of crime who nobody in this room wants living in their communities.”

Meanwhile, the White House has expressed no intention of intervening in the case of Abrego Garcia, whose deportation was labeled an administrative error by the Justice Department. He remains in a Salvadoran prison known for its high death rate and human rights abuses.

Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen emphasized the importance of due process, stating, “Every American citizen is due their due process, and people who are in the United States under legal protective status like Abrego Garcia was, are entitled to due process.” Van Hollen has pledged to travel to El Salvador if Garcia is not released this week, with other Democratic lawmakers planning to join him.

In related news, Leavitt announced a new presidential memorandum Tuesday aimed at combating fraud within the Social Security Administration.

The memorandum will direct the administration to ensure ineligible aliens are not receiving funds from the Social Security Act programs,” she said. “These taxpayer-funded benefits should be only for eligible taxpayers.”

It’s already against the law for people who are ineligible to receive funds, and questions have been raised about Elon Musk and DOGE’s claims of Social Security fraud.
