Sarah Brown joined HMP Littlehey in 2023, having previously worked in nursing, construction and technology before making the move to the prison service.
She is part of the 55 per cent of women employed across His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service – a statistic which squashes the perception that working in a prison is a male-dominated profession.
There are currently more women working across the service than men, and 41.7 per cent of staff within prisons themselves are women.
Sarah said: “Since joining HMP Littlehey in 2023, I’ve found the experience of helping people to grow, change and make a valued contribution to society to be very rewarding.
“Working in a prison comes with its own unique experiences and challenges and the jobs available are so varied.
“You might think you haven’t got what it takes, but you have.
“It’s not about having qualifications, it’s about the qualities you have, whether you’re a mum, a teacher, a nurse, a pub landlord – there’s no one size fits all when it comes to working for the prison service.”
International Women’s Day is on March 8, and the theme this year is ‘Accelerate Action’, a call to speed up gender equality.
The Ministry of Justice is currently on a national recruitment drive to employ more women across the prison service.
Roles available include prison officers, catering, teaching, psychology and support services across the system.
Sarah said that “whatever your skillset”, there could be a job in the Prison and Probation Service for you.
She added: “People are always surprised to hear that I work in the prison, but they don’t know what opportunities are available to everyone here.”
HMP Littlehey is currently hiring a number of roles.
