South Carolina U.S. attorney exits; prisons chief might be in line

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Adair Ford Boroughs has departed as U.S. attorney for South Carolina following termination by President Donald Trump’s administration.

Tuesday was her last day.

Under the Vacancies Reform Act, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brook Andrews is now the acting U.S. attorney for the District of South Carolina.

It is common for presidents to terminate U.S. Attorneys and appoint their own pick to the office.

While answering questions from reporters Tuesday afternoon, McMaster said that he’s had conversations with President Donald Trump about several appointments, including the appointment for U.S. attorney.

Gov. Henry McMaster said Bryan Stirling, director of South Carolina’s Department of Corrections, is up for consideration for the job.

“Stirling is so talented, so experienced,” McMaster said. “Everybody trusts him. I don’t know of anyone who dislikes him. He really is an extraordinary man with very broad experience.”

Boroughs was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney in July 2022 after she was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Boroughs oversaw a staff that included around 140 attorneys and support personnel.

During her time as the U.S. attorney, Boroughs prioritized enforcement of federal civil rights laws and partnering with local, state, and federal law enforcement to address violent crime.

Boroughs oversaw multiple human trafficking, child exploitation, and white-collar prosecutions, including the recent indictment and extradition of a Nigerian national for a sextortion scheme resulting in the death of 17-year-old Gavin Guffey.
