A male prisoner died at the low-security federal prison in Bastrop on Thursday only a day after arriving at the facility.
Prison employees found 29-year-old Pelesasa Feiloaiga unresponsive, according to a press release, and began trying to save his life. Emergency medical services personnel were called to the prison, but Feiloaiga ultimately died.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons did not say how Feiloaiga died but noted that no one else was injured and that the public was never in danger. The Federal Corrections Institution Bastrop did not immediately return a request for comment.
Feiloaiga was serving a 72-month sentence for a carjacking and had been in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Bastrop since Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to the charge in January in the Western District of Texas U.S. District Court, documents show.
Feiloaiga was represented by federal public defender Ashley Ali Askari, who did not immediately return the American-Statesman’s request for comment on his death.
According to charging documents, Feiloaiga stole a vehicle at gunpoint in McGregor, Texas, southwest of Waco, on Sept. 11, 2021.
The next day, documents say, Feiloaiga robbed a 7-Eleven at gunpoint and stole another person’s vehicle in Temple. Feiloaiga was found by officers walking along the side of Interstate 35 in Burleson, Texas, just south of Fort Worth, the day after robbing the 7-Eleven.
